For dogs, the 2022 AAHA Canine Vaccination Guidelines list canine distemper virus, adenovirus, and parvovirus (frequently combined into a single combination vaccine, sometimes with parainfluenza added) as core, alongside rabies. For cats, the AAHA/AAFP guidelines list FeLV in adult cats (recommended for cats with outdoor access, or that live with cats of unknown FeLV status), Chlamydia felis, and Bordetella bronchiseptica as noncore, again tied to lifestyle. The guidelines are explicit that this isn't a one-time decision: they call for a lifestyle and exposure risk assessment "at least once a year," considering not just whether a cat goes outdoors, but factors like travel, boarding, housing changes, and any other cats sharing the household.

Why Your Veterinarian — Not a Generic List — Decides the Protocol

Rabies: A Special Case
